About

As part of my final project I wanted to produce issue based illustrations in a range of different media. The government is currently attempting to sell us the idea of “The Big Society.” There is much confusion as to what this actually stands for and what is wanted of us.

“At its core, the big society is an attempt to connect the civic institutions that lie between the individual and the state – and these range from the family and neighbourhood to churches, charities, libraries, local schools and hospitals. It is born out of recognition that our centralised state has become too big, too bureaucratic and just too distant to support many of those most in need of help, and that it deters people from playing a more active role in public life.”
Ian Birrell,The Guardian, Saturday 9 October 2010

On the surface it appears to be one of the more positive notions to come from the current coalition however some feel it is purely smoke and mirrors, whilst appearing to be doing something that will benefit the public they may actually just be trying to generate positive publicity to counterbalance all of the negative that has been produced as a result of some of their less favourable decisions. Distracting the public with a campaign nobody really knows anything about and calling it something vague may well just be a way of avoiding the more difficult questions and discussions about the more prevalent issues affecting us all.

This site will provide me with a way of organising the research I find about the relevant topics, see “The Broken Society project” for more information, in a way that can be easily accessed and discussed by the public. Many people feel as though their voice isn’t being heard by those in power. The Broken Society provides a forum for those that wish to discuss and debate the concerns and matters of the general public with likeminded individuals.

Although my aim is to draw attention to the negative aspects of society, this site is not biased. Articles will be published that both support and criticise elements of the chosen topics. I will obviously have my own opinion about the issues being discussed however I will attempt to present a fair and balanced argument where possible. The views and opinions expressed by participants are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views of the Blog owner. I feel it is important not to censor the views of the public however any comments or remarks that are found to be inappropriate and/or offensive will be removed by the moderator.
